About Willimantic, CT

Willimantic is a Native American term that means "land and running water" so named because of the swift-moving waters of a 25-mile river that flows south of the city. As a small village with about 20 families, a school district and a factory on Main Street made of stone quarried from the river, it was then known as Willimantic Falls. The population has since grown to 17,737 according to the 2010 census. Willimantic was also once called the "Thread City" because of the Mill that was erected on the Willimantic River by the American Thread Company.
